Find Maine psychiatric providers, counseling and other resources for mental health care with insurance

If your loved one is covered by insurance

  • When you’re helping your loved one look for mental health services, it’s always a good idea to check with the insurance company. They may require pre-authorization or  a referral for any mental health services.
  • You’ll find a list of Maine’s major health insurers on our Maine Insurance page. It’s best to have your loved one’s insurance card or member number when you check the insurance company’s website or call the customer service number.
  • Your loved one’s insurance company will provide a list of mental health providers in your area who accept their coverage. Keep in mind that even though a provider is listed as accepting new patients, this information is not always up to date on the insurance company’s website.
  • Primary Care Physician (PCP):  Your loved one’s medical doctor has received basic training to recognize psychiatric disorders.  This is a good place to begin, especially if your loved one has a relationship with his/her PCP.
  • You won’t be able to make an appointment for someone 18 or older, but you can call providers to see if they’re accepting new patients, and if they accept your loved one’s insurance. It’s also OK to tell providers a little bit about your worries and your loved one’s name.
  • Even if your loved one has private insurance, he/she still may qualify for MaineCare. In Maine, some mental health services are available only to people who have MaineCare. Their case manager or a social worker can help them apply. Get more information about MaineCare.

Words of Hope

"When someone you love so deeply gets ill, everyone is changed in some ways. It takes a team to keep our physical and spiritual beings going in the face of the strife and pain that comes when mental illness hits home."
